Hydra, one of the most cosmopolitan Greek islands, is known for its classy beauty: it was a filming location for “A Girl in Black” and “Boy on a Dolphin,” and a favorite holiday spot for Leonard Cohen. On Hydra island, there are no cars - everyone gets around on foot, by boat, or on donkeys. This car ban, combined with the elegant stone mansions, creates a charming and serene atmosphere, making Hydra one of the most peaceful destinations near Athens.

Steeped in history and timeless charm, Hydra is one of Greece's most captivating islands. Built amphitheatrically around its picturesque harbor, the island is famous for its elegant stone mansions, rich maritime heritage, and unique character, where cars are replaced by donkeys, mules, and boats.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Hydra grew into one of the Mediterranean's greatest naval powers. Its skilled sailors and powerful merchant fleet brought prosperity to the island, while its legendary captains played a pivotal role in the Greek War of Independence in 1821. Heroes such as Andreas Miaoulis led Hydra's fleet to victory, helping shape the course of modern Greek history. Now it's your turn to explore its rich history.
